How to Resurface the Face After a Face Lift
No matter how well you care for your skin, exposure to the sun and other environmental elements will eventually cause it to show signs of aging. Though a face lift can decrease sagging of the skin, on the face and neck, it does not rid the skin of other visible signs of aging which include age spots and discoloration, resulting from decades of sun damage. Therefore, to get the most youthful looking skin possible, you may consider having one of several resurfacing procedures after a face lift. Does this Spark an idea?

Have a chemical peel, also called chemexfoliation or dermapeel resurfacing. Chemical peels remove the outer layer of skin, lightening irregular skin pigmentation and smoothing fine lines and wrinkles.
An esthetician or trained medical personnel may perform light to medium strength chemical peels. Afterward, you may need to use camouflage makeup to mask redness, but can resume normal activities immediately. A physician applies a deep chemical peel since it may require sedation during application. Expect to spend up to two weeks recovering, before resuming normal activities.
In May 2011, light peels cost $150 to $300 per treatment, while deeper peels range from $2500 to $6000 per treatment.

Resurface the skin without burning its outer layer, using Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) treatments.
During the process, a technician uses a wand to deliver light energy to the skin, stimulating activity in the cells. As the light goes deep into the skin tissue, it increases collagen production, resulting in plumping of the skin, filling in fine lines, and wrinkles. The light also breaks up melanocytes, causing an improvement in freckles and age spots. Though you may need several of these treatments, you will not likely experience scarring or complications and may resume normal activities immediately after the session.
Treatments cost between $300 and $600, as of May 2011 and you need to have four to six treatments to see significant results.

Undergo microdermabrasion. During this treatment, a trained skincare professional uses a device that blows crystals onto the skin to exfoliate its non-living layers.
Currrently, in May 2011, microdermabrasion costs about $75 to $100 per treatment.

Purchase an at-home microdermabrasion system. It features an abrasive cream, and in some cases a mechanical brush with which to apply the cream.
Kits range in price from $25 to $100, as of May 2011. An at-home treatment will not produce results as dramatic as one performed by a professional, but you will see an improvement in dark spots and fine lines.

Tips & Warnings
No face lift or resurfacing treatment produces results that last forever. However, practicing good skincare habits will help maintain the results for as long as possible.
Cautiously consider the risks of these options if you have dark skin. Aggressive resurfacing may cause permanent discoloration on dark skin.
