How to Make Mashups With Mixcraft

A mashup combines the vocals from one song with the instrumental track from another song. Mashups became popular after the success of tracks like Freelance Hellraiser's "A Stroke of Genius," which mixed Cristina Aguilera's "Genie in a Bottle" with "Hard to Explain" by The Strokes. Artists like Danger Mouse and Girl Talk have created full-length albums consisting entirely of mashups. To make your own mashup, combine a digital vocal file with an instrumental backing in Acoustica's Mixcraft, which can automatically adjust the tempos and key signatures of audio files to ensure musical harmony.

Instructions

    • 1

Launch Mixcraft. Click the icon next to "Build Loop and Beat Match Music" to start a new mashup session.

    • 2

Double-click the first audio track. Navigate to the folder containing the instrumental track and double-click it to insert it into the session. Click "Yes" when Mixcraft asks you if you want to change the project's tempo.

    • 3

Click the "Sound" tab near the bottom of the window. Note the letter next to "Key." Click the "Project" tab and select the same letter from the "Key" drop-down menu.

    • 4

Double-click the second audio track. Double-click the acapella file to add it to the session.

    • 5

Click the "Sound" tab. Click the "Adjust Pitch By" drop-down menu and select "Adjust to Project Key."

    • 6

Click "Play" to listen to the mashup. If you're satisfied with the result, click "File" and hover the mouse over "Mix Down To." Click on an audio format, type in a name for the mashup and click "Save."
