How to Reinstall IIS on SBS 2008

SBS (Small Business Server) is a Windows server operating system that packages two major server components in one: Windows Server 2008 and Exchange Server 2007. These two components are usually sold separately, but Microsoft decided to create an SBS line to target small-and-medium businesses (SMB) who want to have both technologies. It started with SBS 2003, followed it with SBS 2008 and then came out with the updated SBS 2011. SBS 2011 makes it easier for SMBs to manage their network because both components are already pre-configured. IIS (Internet Information Services) is a Windows component that's available to all operating systems. It's available, by default, to server operating systems such as Windows 2003 and Windows 2008, but it's optional to client operating systems such as Windows XP and Windows 7.

  • Log in to the Windows SBS 2008 server.

  • Click "Start," go to "Administrative Tools" and then click "Server Manager."

  • Click "Add Roles" under "Role Summary" to open the "Add Roles Wizard."

  • Click "Next" after going through the verification page where the wizard asks you if the administrator password is strong, if the network settings are configured and if you have the latest updates installed.

  • Check the "Web Server (IIS)" check box from the "Select Server Roles" page.

  • Select the IIS services you want to install under the "Select Role Services" page. Services include "Common HTTP Features," "Application and Development" and "Health and Diagnostics." Click "Next" to continue.

  • Click the "Add Required Role Services" button in the "Add Roles Wizard" page. Some of the IIS services you selected may need other services before they get installed. The wizard identifies the services that need to be installed and installs them before continuing with the IIS installation.

  • Click "Close" to finish installation.
