How to Transfer Your Billing Responsibilities to Another Phone on AT&T

An original AT&T account holder may shift billing responsibilities to another individual by completing a Transfer of Billing Responsibility request. The original account holder must have a postpaid account, active service for at least 60 days and no past-due balances. The new account holder must be at least 18 years old depending on geographical location, pass a credit check and accept the terms of the remaining contract. The transferee must pay a fee if completing the transfer by phone or in a retail store. As of May 2011, the transfer fee is $18.

  • Approve the Transfer process by logging into your wireless AT&T account. Choose "Support" at the top of the page next to "Shop."

  • Navigate to "Phone/Device Support" and select "Transfer My Phone." The "Answer Center" page will open.

  • Select "Transfer my wireless phone number" located in the "Refer to" column next to "Task." This opens the "Transfer of Billing Responsibility Request" page. If you cannot open the "Transfer of Billing Responsibility Request" page, type "Transfer of Billing Responsibility Request" in the search bar located on the top right-side of the page and click "Go."

  • Place a check in the box next to the number. Enter the transferee's name and email. Click "Accept & Check Eligibility." AT&T will forward the authorization request to the transferee. The authorization remains valid for 14 days.

  • Allow time for the transferee to complete the transfer acceptance process. The original account holder receives an email confirmation and text message once the account transfers.
