DIY LED Bottle Light

DIY LED Bottle Light thumbnail
Turn a used soda, beer or wine bottle into a lamp.

While the end result may appear complicated, making an LED bottle light is actually a relatively simple project. Instead of throwing away old soda bottles, beer bottles or wine bottles, consider recycling them into one-of-a-kind light fixtures for your home. The few materials for this project will cost you less than $5 and take less than one hour to complete. Use white LED lights for a clean look or colored LED lights to give your bottle light some pizazz. (See References 1 and 2)

Instructions

    • 1

Choose a bottle of your liking for the base of your light. Use wine bottles for a large lamp or soda or beer bottles for a smaller lamp. You can even use an odd-shaped glass bottle to add some character. (See References 2)

    • 2

Test a strand of LED lights to ensure they work before placing in the bottle. (See References 2)

    • 3

Drill a 3/8-inch hole at the center of the bottom of the bottle. Be sure to use a glass drill bit to avoid breaking the glass. (See References 2)

    • 4

Pull the string of LED lights carefully up through the hole at the bottom of the bottle so that the string of lights forms a messy configuration inside the bottle. (See References 2)

    • 5

Leave the bottle plain or decorate by painting on a light coat of paint so that you will still be able to see the lights shining through the bottle. (See References 2)

    • 6

Place the cap on the bottle and plug the light in from the cord that comes out of the bottom. (See References 2)

Tips & Warnings

  • If you prefer to use a plastic bottle to make a bottle light, do not use string lights. Instead, attach an SW LED module to the mouth of the water bottle, hang the module from the ceiling and turn on. You can even crush the water bottle for an extra design element. (See References 1)
