How to Make My Text Go Horizontally in Microsoft Word

Text in Microsoft Word can go in two directions: horizontally, which means it reads from left to right across the screen, or vertically, which means it reads from top to bottom. By default, text is horizontal in a Word document. If you currently have vertical text that you want to switch back to the horizontal direction, whether for layout purposes or increased ease of reading, you can change the text alignment in just a few clicks.

Vertical to Horizontal

  • Open your document in Microsoft Word.

  • Click on the edge of the text box containing vertical text to select the text box.

  • Click the "Format" tab.

  • Click "Text Direction" and select "Horizontal."
