How to Braid Rope Strands

How to Braid Rope Strands thumbnail
Braiding rope gives it added strength.

According to Advanced Tactics, the strength of rope relies on the friction between the separate strands. So while three separate strands are stronger than one, braiding the three strands makes the rope stronger. Braiding the three strand of rope is similar to braiding hair. One notable difference is that you will need to calculate the length of the finished rope before you braid. Braiding shortens the rope, just as braided hair is shorter than a ponytail.

Instructions

    • 1

Calculate the length of rope you need for the finished rope. Write down the length of the desired rope. Add 1/3 of the length, and then double the measure. For example, if you want a 12-foot rope, add 1/3 of the length to make it 16 feet. Finally, double the total for 32 feet. This is the length needed for each strand to braid a 12-foot rope.

    • 2

Cut three strands of rope to your calculated length.

    • 3

Line up the ends of all three strands. Wrap the end with tape to hold the ends securely.

    • 4

Spread the three ropes out to create a right, middle and left-hand strand.

    • 5

Lay the right-hand strand over the center strand, becoming the new middle strand.

    • 6

Lay the left hand strand between the other two strands, placing it in the center.

    • 7

Repeat Steps 5 and 6, always alternating sides and placing the strand between the other two. Continue to the end of the rope. Secure the end with tape.

Tips & Warnings

  • You can tie all three strands into a simple knot to secure the strands as well.
