How to Videochat From an iPhone to a PC

If you have a relative who lives overseas or a cellular plan that charges more for calls to friends with other carriers, you can use a free program called Skype to make free video calls from your phone to a computer. Both you and the person you want to call must have Skype user names and be online in order to have a live conversation, but once you both have Skype set up you can video chat for free for as long as you want.

Get Skype

  • Tell the people you want to video chat with to download the PC version of Skype onto their computers and create Skype usernames.

  • Go to your iPhone's home screen and tap the App Store app.

  • Tap "Search" and type "Skype" into the search bar. Press "Search."

  • Tap the first listing. Tap the "Free" button on the next page to download the app. Enter your Apple ID and password when prompted.

Use Skype

  • Tap the Skype icon after the progress bar disappears.

  • Enter your Skype name and password, or tap "Create Account" and follow the prompts.

  • Tap "Contacts." Tap the "+" button in the upper-right corner to add a contact. The contact will have to accept your request. When he has, he will appear on your contact list. If he is currently online, he will appear with a green icon next to his name. You may need to prearrange your Skype call so that you are both on at the same time; you can't talk unless both parties are on Skype.

  • Tap the person's name when his icon indicates that he is online. Tap "Video Call" on the next page. This initiates the call and he will have to click "Answer" to make the connection.

Tips & Warnings

  • Unless your contact has the iPhone 4 or another phone such as the Nexus S that has a forward-facing camera capable of facilitating video chat, he will need a webcam and a microphone for his computer. Most modern computers come equipped with these, but older models may not.
