How to Install "Civilization 5"

Save

"Civilization 5" is a turn based strategy game released for the PC and the first in the Civilization series to require the "Steam" platform by Valve for installation. Whether you buy a physical copy of the game in stores or purchase it as a digital download online, a working internet connection and Steam account is required in order to install the game. Fortunately the process is free and comes with benefits, like Steam Cloud support, achievements and automatic patching. Once installed, the game is permanently tied to the Steam account and cannot be transferred to another account.

Digital Download

  • Install the Steam client from the official website.

  • Create a free Steam account, then log in with your details. The computer on which you log into the account must be connected to the internet.

  • Right click the "Civilization 5" icon in your Steam library and select "Install Game." The game will begin to install on your computer.

Retail Disc

  • Install the Steam client from the official website. Create a free Steam account if you do not already have one. Log in to your Steam account.

  • Insert your "Civilization V" game disc into your DVD drive and select "Install" from the autorun menu.

  • Enter the "Civilization V" product key, which is found on the back of the manual or inside of the DVD case. Follow the rest of the installation wizard instructions. The game is now installed on your computer.

Tips & Warnings

  • If you purchased "Civilization 5" from another online retailer, you would have received a CD key which needs to be entered in the Steam client before the game can be installed. To do this, click the "Add A Game" link at the bottom left of the Steam client then click "Activate A Product On Steam." Enter the code that was e-mailed to you and install the game from your Steam library.
