How to DM Text Tweets

The social networking web site, Twitter can also be accessed through your phone. After you have set up Twitter for your phone, you can send messages, reply to users and even direct message (DM) users from your phone. A direct messaging is a private message between you and another Twitter user. Like with normal tweets, a DM can only be 140 characters long. You can DM through the Twitter web site, through an application on your smart phone or through a text message from your phone.

  • Set up a text message on your phone.

  • Address the message with the Twitter short code where you would type in the contact or phone number for a text message. The Twitter short code is the "phone number" for Twitter. For U.S. users, it's 40404. For a list of other short codes, refer to the web site in the Resources section.

  • Type the letter "d" at the beginning of your text message. Leave a space and then type out the username of the person you want to send a DM to. For example: d JohnDoe.

  • Leave another space and then write out your message. For example: d John Doe Hi, how are you?

  • Send your message to the short code you entered. The user will be able to read his message from his phone, smart phone or through Twitter's web site.

Tips & Warnings

  • You can only send DMs from your phone if you have already set up your phone to send and receive text messages through Twitter.
  • Don't exceed 140 characters when sending your message. This includes everything you type including the "d" and the username.
