How to Update an iPhone Without Losing Data

Updates provide enhancement and fixes to the iPhone software. Applying updates is essential to ensure the iPhone runs efficiently. Owners of the iPhone can determine if an update is available for their phone through the iTunes interface on their computers. If an update is available, the owner is prompted to install the update. The update affects only the software of the phone. Data, downloaded apps and settings are all left unaffected.

  • Attach the supplied USB cable to your iPhone and an open USB port on your computer. The computer automatically recognizes your iPhone and launches iTunes. If iTunes doesn't automatically load, launch the program manually.

  • Click "Start" located at the bottom of the screen. Click "All Programs" and then click "iTunes."

  • Click the "iPhone" icon from the left navigation bar under "Devices."

  • Click the "Summary" tab from the center pane of iTunes.

  • Click the "Check for Update" button. ITunes scans your device to determine if the phone is up to date. If there is an update available, iTunes prompts you to install it.

  • Click "Update" to install the latest update. Follow the onscreen prompts of the Update Wizard to successfully complete the installation.
