Origami Dress Instructions for Mother's Day

Origami crafts look great on greeting cards and gift boxes.

Origami crafts are a fun way to decorate cards, artwork and gift boxes. With Mother's Day coming up, invite children to help make fun, whimsical dresses to adorn their Mother's Day cards. Origami paper comes in beautiful colors and designs, but scrap booking or regular paper works just as well.

Instructions

1. Lay patterned paper square face down and fold it in half. Fold it in half again to form a small square. Unfold and lay it flat. There will be horizontal and vertical crease lines to work with as the folding guide.

2. Fold one side in to where it meets on the center line. Fold the other side in to also meet at the center line.

3. Take the bottom section where the two folds meet, and make a crease from the bottom outside corner, up to the inside corner just above the horizontal crease line. Do this for both sides to make the flair of the skirt. The new folds will look like long triangles on the back.

4. Crease the top section in the same way to create the sleeves. The angle of the fold determines how long the sleeves will be.

5. Cut 1/4 inch along the vertical center line. Turn the dress over. Fold the paper down on the patterned side to make a collar. Round the corners if desired.

6. Turn to the backside. Using the center horizontal line as a guide, make a step fold upward to create a waistband in the dress. The fold should be no more than 1/4 inch wide.

7. Fold down the back corners of the step fold to secure the waistband. The dress is complete and can be attached to a card or gift box.

Tips & Warnings

• There are several variations of origami dresses; try different styles until you find one you like the best.

• Work on a solid surface to get the best creases.
