How to Make a Hello Kitty Pinata Out of a Cereal Box

Hello Kitty"is a children's character created in Japan and popularized in many countries. For a guest of honor who loves the character, you can make a Hello Kitty piñata for a birthday party from a cereal box and a few other inexpensive items. Fill the cereal box piñata with lollipops and other candies and add a few discount store Hello Kitty items for an extra thrill for the party group.

Things You'll Need

  • White cardstock or Bristol board
  • Black construction paper
  • Craft glue
  • 1 ½-inch-wide ribbon
  • ¼-inch-wide ribbon
  • Candies
  • Trace a large outline of the head of Hello Kitty onto a piece of white cardstock or Bristol board. Cut out the image and use it as a template to cut out another identical image. The cutouts should each be larger than the face of the cereal box.

  • Cut 12 small strips of black construction paper. Glue six onto one of the cutouts and six onto the other to make whiskers. Glue the whiskers at the right and left edges of each cutout, approximately 1/3 of the way from the bottom of the cutout.

  • Cut out four small black circles and use two on each cutout for eyes. Cut out two oblong circles from the black construction paper and use one on each cutout for the nose.

  • Make two bows from 1 ½-inch-wide ribbon. Apply a little bit of glue to the back of each bow. Press one of the bows firmly against the cutout, just below Hello Kitty's left ear. Glue the other bow in the same spot on the other cutout.

  • Trace each of the four narrow sides of the cereal box onto a piece of white cardstock or Bristol board. Cut out the tracings and glue them to the three narrow (closed) sides of the cereal box to hide the writing and pictures on the box. Leave the open end of the cereal box uncovered for now and set aside the cutout for this end to glue on the box later.

  • Cover one face of the cereal box with craft glue. Center one of the Hello Kitty cutouts on top of the cereal box and press it firmly against the box.

  • Flip over the cereal box and cover the presenting face with glue. Center the remaining Hello Kitty cutout on the box and press firmly.

  • Poke two holes in the cereal box above Hello Kitty's head. Thread a piece of ¼-inch-wide ribbon through both holes and tie the ends in a knot to hang the piñata.

  • Fill the Hello Kitty piñata with candies and other goodies.

  • Apply a line of glue along the open edges of the box and close the box, pressing firmly to let the glue adhere. Cover this narrow side of the box with glue and place the plain white cutout, set aside earlier, over the glue to hide the cereal box.
