How to Celebrate Dia De La Raza

Day of the Race is the English translation of the holiday called Dia de la Raza, which happens annually on October 12. Dia de la Raza is the day to celebrate the coming of Columbus to the new world -- not because Latin America wants to celebrate Columbus, but because the voyage led to the blending of races, creating the families and cultures we have now. Dia de la Raza is celebrated by the name Columbus Day in the United States, Discovery Day in the Bahamas and Fiesta Nacional in Spain. There is no proper way to celebrate Dia de la Raza, so make the celebration your own.

Instructions

    • 1

Invite your family over for a big meal together. Plan a menu of Spanish foods, Italian foods and your own personal family recipes. Since many cultures celebrate Dia de la Raza, those foods may vary. The Spanish food is for Spain, who funded Columbus's expedition. The Italian food is for Columbus himself, who was Italian. Remember: it's not about celebrating the voyage, but more about the mixture of races that followed Columbus's voyage.

    • 2

Look for local events that celebrate Dia de la Raza if you live in a large, urban area especially. Plan to attend with your children, since the events are primarily educational. Some places may also put on parades for locals to attend.

    • 3

Create a family tree with your family. Talk about family members. Tell stories and add photos where you can. Look at where different cultures intersect to create the family you have now.

    • 4

Examine your own family traditions and guess where they're rooted. Talk about the different cultures, the blending that led to small holiday traditions or daily rituals.
