How to Make Jewerly Out of Recycled Cans

Save

Jewelry crafts don't always have to be made of resin, polymer clay and beads. The current trend is to make recycled jewelry, and you can make gorgeous recycled jewelry from sheets of aluminum, which you can cut from soda cans. Aluminum can be easily reshaped, painted and even glued to other pieces of aluminum. Make just as many types of jewelry from recycled aluminum as you do from other craft materials. This jewelry makes the perfect gift for friends and family, or even to sell at craft stores.

Things You'll Need

  • Aluminum soda cans
  • Heavy-duty scissors
  • Heavy utility knife
  • Jump rings
  • Sandpaper
  • Acrylic paint
  • Spray sealer
  • Necklace chain
  • Tracing paper
  • Art transfer paper
  • Pliers
  • Glue
  • Earring hooks
  • Draw a necklace pendant style you like on a piece of paper. Make it the size of the pendant you want.

  • Cut the bottom and top off of the aluminum can using a heavy-duty sharp knife or sharp scissors.

  • Cut along the length of can.

  • Flatten out the can by pressing it flat against the work table. If it doesn't flatten easily, place heavy objects on top. Allow it to sit overnight.

  • Sand the printing off the aluminum with sandpaper.

  • Draw or trace your pendant shape on the unprinted, inside of the soda can. Cut the outline out with heavy scissors.

  • Curve the edges up or under to remove their dangerous sharpness. Decorate any remaining sharp edges by adding Filo clay to the edge.

  • Paint and decorate the pendant the way you want. Spray a sealer to protect the pendant from scratches, dust or dirt.

  • Punch a small hole in the top of the pendant using the tip of the scissors. Insert a small jump ring through hole.

  • String a necklace chain through the pendant to finish your can necklace.

Aluminum Can Earrings

  • Draw out the style and shape of one of the earrings you want. Place tracing paper over your final design and trace over the image.

  • Place a piece of transfer paper over the flattened aluminum and tape in place so it does not move. Put the tracing paper with the image over this and retrace the image. Make another tracing on another blank area of the aluminum to create the second earring shape. Lift the tracing and transfer paper to see the two traced images on the aluminum.

  • Cut the two traced identical shapes out of the aluminum can. Curve the rims of your shapes with pliers. Glue another aluminum piece to it or curve the small piece until you get the design you want.

  • Punch a small hole at the top of the aluminum can earring pieces using the tip of the scissors. Paint the aluminum pieces using clear acrylic paint. Once they dry, paint the aluminum pieces however you want or leave them as they are.

  • Place a jump ring through the punched hole and attach an earring hook through the jump ring.
