Grocers usually sell bananas in prepacked bunches containing more bananas that can be consumed before over-ripening. While adults and children enjoy fresh bananas in a variety of ways, it becomes a challenge to avoid wasting bananas that ripen too quickly. With the proper storage techniques, bananas can be kept fresh longer.
Things You'll Need
- Banana hanger or tree
Unwrap the bananas from the plastic bags or packaging. Keeping them in an enclosed environment increases the effect of the gases that cause them to ripen quickly.
Hang the bananas on a banana hanger or banana tree. This allows the air to circulate all around them. In lieu of a banana hanger, they can be kept in a colander away from other fruit, which also increases the ripening process.
Store bananas that have reached the peak of ripeness in the refrigerator. The refrigerator will darken the banana skin, but will not effect the fruit. Bananas can also be stored in the freezer and used later.
