How to Build Letters With Tangrams

A set of tangrams consist of seven polygonal shapes that can be combined and rearranged to create letters, animals and geometric designs. Originally an ancient Chinese puzzle, tangrams have been adapted to classrooms for use in reinforcing various mathematical concepts both introductory and advanced. One set of tangrams contains one small square, one parallelogram and five different-sized right triangles: two large, one medium and two small. You can form various letters of the alphabet, such as an uppercase "E," out of a set of tangrams.

Instructions

    • 1

Place one large triangle on your work surface, with the right angle pointing up and to the left side. Arrange the other large triangle with the right angle down and facing the left side. Push the two triangles together so the adjacent points are touching.

    • 2

Set the medium-sized triangle's right angle so it is touching the two pushed-together points of the large triangles. The three triangles should form somewhat of the straight line of the capital letter "E" with the opposite large triangle points extending from the base line.

    • 3

Complete the middle section of the capital letter "E" by placing the small square shape so that it is touching the open straight edge of the medium-sized triangle making up the straight base line of the letter.

    • 4

Position one long edge of the parallelogram next to the extended tip of the top large triangle to complete the upper line of the "E," although it is angled toward the center.

    • 5

Push the two small triangles together to form another parallelogram with two sides touching. Orient one right angle of a smaller triangle toward the top of the parallelogram and one toward the bottom.

    • 6

Push the created parallelogram toward the extended tip of the large triangle positioned at the bottom of the capital letter "E" to extend the final bottom line angled up.
