How to Use a Toenail File on the Side of a Toenail

Using a nail file will help ensure that your pedicure is attractive, as you smooth away rough edges and keep your nails at the perfect length for you. To get the best results, use a metal nail file, which can file the thicker nails on your toes better than a standard emory board.

Instructions

1. Remove any dirt or nail polish from your toes by dipping a cotton swab into nail polish remover and swiping across your nail. This will ensure you are able to see all angles of your nails clearly.

2. Clip any hang nails or dry skin away from the edges of your toenails using a small nail clipper. Do not pull skin off.

3. Hold the nail file vertically against the side of your nail. You may angle it slightly if filing the top of the toenail.

4. File the side of the nail upward in one direction. Do not file back and forth. Rather, repeat the upward motion with the file.

5. File the nail until it is smooth and no edges are sharp. Wipe away residue from your toes as you go. The side of your nail should create a slightly rounded angle with the top of your nail when you have finished.

• Scrub the bottom of your feet with a pumice stone to remove dead skin and create soft feet.
