How to Remove Dust Marks From GIMP


Having to repair dusty and spotted photos is always a bit of a chore. You might think that to remove dust from a a photo you will have to use a high priced application like Photoshop of Paintshop Photo Pro. However, if you have the freeware graphics editor GIMP, you can easily remove dust, scratches and other spots from your photo.

  • Load the photo you want to edit onto your computer.

  • Click on the desktop shortcut to start the GIMP program. Select "File" from the menu and choose "Open." In the dialog box that appears, locate the photo you loaded and open it.

  • Select "Filter" from the menu and choose "Enhance." From the options, choose "Despeckle." A dialog box will open.

  • Click on the "Adaptive" checkbox. Go to the sliders and adjust the "Radius," "Black Level" and "White Level" until you like the preview. Keep in mind that the higher you set the "Radius" the more blurred your retouched image will be. Click "OK" and save your work.
