How to Create a Pattern for SketchUp

The results of 3D modeling are seen in movies, video game and many other places. The models themselves are made of mathematical defined 3D meshes overlayed with a texture of some kind. This texture provides the colors for the object in question. If you are using the freeware graphics program SketchUp to create your models, you use the "Paintbucket" tool to apply a pattern (texture) from the categories offered. However, you can also load an image you want to use as a pattern.

  • Load an image you would like to use as a pattern onto your computer. This image should be seamless.

  • Open SketchUp.

  • Go to the toolbar on the left and click on the "Paintbucket" tool. In the dialog box that opens, click on the "Create Material" icon. This opens a second dialog.

  • Name the material and click on the "Use Texture Image" checkbox. Browse to the image you want to use as a pattern and click "Open."

  • Click "OK" to close the dialog box. You will now see your new pattern listed in the categories and ready to use.
