How to Connect VMware to Host

VMware is a hypervisor. A hypervisor is a software program that lets you run multiple operating systems concurrently on a computer. When an operating system is installed into a VMware configuration, called a virtual machine, it is presented with a virtualized set of hardware, such as hard drives and network cards. You can connect a virtual machine in VMware to the host computer by configuring the VMware shared folders feature.

  • Power off the virtual machine.

  • Click "Edit virtual machine settings."

  • Click "Options."

  • Click "Shared Folders."

  • Click "Always enabled" and "Map as a network drive in Windows guests."

  • Click the "Add" button to configure folders to be shared from the host computer to the virtual machine.

  • Click "OK" to save the settings.

Tips & Warnings

  • After the virtual machine is powered on, the shared folders on the VMware host are accessible as a network drive. Click the "Start" button in the lower-left corner of the screen and then click "Computer." The VMware host files are listed as a network drive. Double-click the network drive to access the host files.
