How to Remove Duplicate Lines in Word Documents

Two heads may be better than one and doubling your pleasure may be a worthy undertaking, but sometimes duplicates can wreak havoc. In a Microsoft Word document, user error or a blip in the system's processing can result in duplicate lines. This doesn't mean you've got to take the double-take. Instead, remove the lines with a single click, no duplicate -- or double -- clicks required.

  • Open Word. Click "File." Click "Open." Navigate to the Word document with the duplicate lines and double-click the file name. When the Word document opens in a new window, scroll or press the "Page Down" key to get to the first duplicate line incidence.

  • Remove duplicate lines of text by placing the cursor to the left of the first character in the duplicate line. Press and hold down the left mouse button. Drag to highlight the line, including any punctuation at the end. Press the "Delete" key on the keyboard.

  • Remove duplicate graphical lines -- an actual line drawn on the page -- by clicking once on the line to highlight it, where two small boxes or circles appear at either end. Press the "Delete" key to remove the duplicate.

Tips & Warnings

  • Another way to search for textual duplicate lines is to employ Word's search feature. Press the "Ctrl" and "F" keys together to open the "Navigation" pane in the left side of the screen. Type the line of text with duplicate words into the text box at the top of the pane and press the "Enter" key. Word then highlights everywhere the line appears. Scroll to the extraneous instances or click them where they show in the "Navigation" pane list and delete them. This process is not possible with graphic lines.
