How to Write a Paper on a Poem
Writing a paper on a poem is one of the most interesting topics you can write about. Since poems do not directly state their meanings, the interpretation of a poem is up to each individual reader. When writing an essay on a poem, look for any significant themes. Analyze the topic of the poem. Describe the author's meaning. Your essay should include your perception of the poem in the thesis statement.

Before starting an essay, be sure you understand the assignment. When teachers give an assignment for students to write a paper or essay on a poem, they give an assignment description and guidelines for students to follow. Be sure to read the entire assignment description and guidelines before starting the paper. The guidelines may help you decide what poem you want to write about if you are given a choice.

2
Choose a poem that has a lot of meaning to you so that it will be easier to write about. Whether you are assigned a specific poem or are given a choice, read the poem several times and be sure you understand it before you begin. It is easier if you take one verse at a time and make notes as you go. You should make some type of outline that follows the guidelines of the assignment. This will make it easier to take notes that are important to the assignment.

Decide how to "hook" the reader in the introduction. The introduction of the the paper is the first step to writing a good essay. The first couple sentences should catch the readers' attention and keep them interested. Introduce the poem and author. Then state your thesis, or your paper's main idea.

Use lines from the poem to show examples of figurative language. The body of the paper is where you argue your idea. You will describe figurative language used by the poet, as well, as rhyme scheme, allusion and imagery. Be sure to refer to teacher's guidelines to be sure you include all that is required.

Proofread your essay. Conclude the paper by summing up the meaning of the poem and reinforcing your thesis. The conclusion should tie everything together and relate to the introduction.
