How to Cite the ASCA Ethic's Code

The American School Counselor Association adopted its Ethical Standards for School Counselors in 1984, and have revised them in 1992, 1998, 2004, and 2010. The purpose was to set forth a code of conduct governing the proper and ethical behavior of counselors in American schools. To properly cite the ASCA Code of Ethics as a reference in a research paper, format your citation in the following manner.

  • List the name of the author, followed by a period. This information should appear as follows:

    American School Counselor Association.

  • List the name of the work or in italics, followed by a period. This should appear as follows:

    Ethical Standards for School Counselors.

  • List the name of the publisher and the date of publication, separated by a comma. If no date of publication is listed, use "n.d." For example:

    American School Counselor Association, n.d.

  • List the medium of publication. For example:

    Web.

  • List the date on which you accessed this information. For example:

    24 April 2010.

  • List the URL at which you accessed the document in angle brackets. For example:

    <http://www.counselors.k12.sd.us/ethics.html>

  • Ensure that the final citation appears in the following manner. Be sure to italicize the title of the document.
