PC viruses are a fact of computing life, especially when you go online. Having a virus scanner installed and running an up-to-date virus definition library is one way to protect you from acquiring a system-killing infection. McAfee's virus scanner offers an additional level of protection by allowing the creation of a Rescue Disk. This is a boot-disk created using your specific system settings to help when a virus attacks and prevents your operating system from booting normally. Should this occur, you place the Rescue Disk into your floppy drive and then boot to floppy in order to run a virus scanner that clears the virus and replaces damaged system files, getting you back up and running.
Things You'll Need
- McAfee virus scan
- Floppy disk drive
- Floppy disk
Place a floppy disk into your PC's floppy disk drive. Start the McAfee Virus Scan program and scan both the floppy disk and the PC to ensure that they are virus-free.
Right-click on the McAfee icon in the Windows toolbar. Scroll through the options in the pop-up window until you highlight "VirusScan." Select "Create Rescue Disk" from the VirusScan options.
Press "Create" to create a Rescue Disk using the floppy. If the program informs you that it requires the download of the Rescue Disk image file, press "OK" to download it from McAfee's file servers. Verify by pressing "Yes" when warned that the disk creation will erase all data on your floppy.
Wait for the status message in the creation window to change from "Creation" to "Rescue disk created." It should take no more than 5 minutes.
Take the floppy disk from the drive and store it until you need to run the rescue.
Tips & Warnings
- Update the rescue disk every month by performing the creation process again so you always have an up-to-date disk.
