1
Print a picture of a Minpin. While a live subject might be fun to work with for a more advanced artist, beginner's will find it easier to reference a photograph, rather than an animal that constantly changes positions.

2
Set up your work area. Place an easel near a strong source of light such as a window or bright lamp. Place a sheet of drawing paper on your drawing board and secure it into place. Tape the picture of the Pinscher close by for easy reference.

3
Draw the head. The head of Miniature Pinscher are triangular shaped. Draw a horizontal, rounded-triangle shape for the head and two upright triangle shapes for the ears. Use a medium-grade, 2B pencil to draw the outline of your dog.
-
4
Outline the body of the Pinscher using your photograph as a guide. Look at the position of your dog. Purebred Minpins have stocky bodies that sit on top of thin legs. Sketch the general shape of the body and the legs.
-
5
Draw the details of the muzzle, eyes, tail and paws. These dogs commonly have short docked tails with cropped ears. Follow the example in your photograph for the best realism in your drawing.
-
6
Mark the areas where the shadows fall on the dog. Use a hard-grade pencil such as an F grade to lightly sketchy where shaded areas are on your composition. Note where the light shines the brightest on the dog.

7
Create the fur. Use black, brown and red pencils to create the markings of your Miniature Pinscher. Draw with short closely paralleled marks, also known as hatching to simulate the illusion of fur. Use heavy strokes to indicate the shadows and dark-colored fur, and light strokes to indicate the highlights on the dog.

Tips & Warnings
Practice blending different colored pencils together on a scrap piece of paper to achieve the right color for your Minpin's fur.
Lay color on your drawing lightly at first and then go back over with heavier strokes. Colored pencil is difficult to erase from drawing paper.
Use white or grey colored pencils to indicate a sheen on the dog's coat.
Work in a well-ventilated area to avoid the inhalation of graphite and pencil dust.
