How to Write a Speech About My Life

How to Write a Speech About My Life thumbnail
Giving a speech, especially one about yourself, can be harrowing.

Whether you're introducing yourself at a function or retiring from your company, you may be called upon to give a speech about your life. The thought of outlining your accomplishments and failures may make you blush, but there's no reason to be embarrassed by your past. Consider the speech an opportunity to reflect on your life thus far. If you approach the speech with a mix of modesty, pride and humor you should be able to deliver a successful speech.

Instructions

    • 1

Consider your audience. If it's a group of friends or close colleagues you can make your speech personal. If it's in a more professional setting, stick to your professional life with a few personal stories and anecdotes.

    • 2

Make a list of important events in your life. Don't leave out important events because of embarrassment. Your speech will sound more interesting if it includes triumphs and failures. Include a few funny anecdotes too.

    • 3

Read through your list and remove any items that are not interesting or might offend your audience.

    • 4

Organize the events on your list into a rough copy. Putting your speech in chronological order will make your speech easy to follow. Think of your speech as a brief biography. Tell a story about how you got to this point in your life.

    • 5

Read your draft to a friend and ask for his input. This will give you a new perspective on your speech and will give you a feeling for how the speech sounds when it's read aloud.

    • 6

Revise your speech according to your friend's suggestion and make any last minute changes.

Tips & Warnings

  • Make your speech as concise as possible. Unnecessary information will detract from the important points in your speech.

  • Write the way you talk. This will make your speech sound more natural and help you to remember everything.
