How to Watch iTunes Video in a VLC Media Player

VLC is a media player program that lets you watch videos that are encoded with a number of different codecs. One such codec is the MP4 codec supported by Apple's iTunes media management application. If you want to watch a movie stored in your iTunes library with the VLC media player, you can do so in a few simple steps.

  • Double-click the iTunes application icon to launch the application. Click the "Movies" option beneath the "Library" heading to view the videos in the iTunes library.

  • Right-click the video you want to watch in VLC and select the "Show in Windows Explorer" option. If you are a Mac user, select the "Show in Finder" option. The original video file will now be brought up in the Windows Explorer or Finder window.

  • Right-click the video file and move your mouse cursor over the "Open With" option. Select "VLC" from the context menu and the video will open in the VLC media player application.

Tips & Warnings

  • Videos purchased from the iTunes Store have a DRM in place that does not allow them to be played with any other media player. Only videos that were not purchased from the iTunes Store can be played with VLC.
