How to Connect a Camcorder to an iPad

You can connect a digital camcorder to your iPad with the Apple iPad Camera Connector. The video camera must support either H.264 or MPEG-4 video formats to properly connect and import videos. Additionally, if your camcorder takes still photos, then you can import that digital media onto the iPad too.

Things You'll Need

  • Apple iPad Camera Connection kit
  • Connect the iPad Camera Connector to your Apple iPad.

  • Connect the video camera or camcorder via the USB port to the other end of the iPad Camera Connector. Once properly connected with a support camera device, the "Photos" app will automatically open on the iPad, showing the "Camera" pane view.

  • Touch the "Import All" button to begin transferring videos and photos from your iPad. Alternatively, you can select specific media items and tap the "Import" option.

  • Tap the "Keep" or "Delete" options when prompted. After the transfer, this menu will appear, letting you keep media on the video camera or choosing to wipe it clean. Due to manufacturer restrictions some cameras do not let you delete media from a third-party device. If this is the case, you will not see the "Delete" button.

Tips & Warnings

  • If the "Camera" pane does not load when connecting the two devices, troubleshoot to make sure there is a firm connection with the cable and ports. You can also disconnect, wait for 30 seconds and try connecting again. If this does not work, then restart the iPad and power down your video camera. Turn both devices back on and try again.
