How to Transfer From an iPad to a Mac

To transfer most files from your iPad to your Mac computer, you need only to plug in your iPad. Once it is connected to your Mac, iTunes will automatically launch and sync itself to your iPad, copying music, videos, photos and contacts to your computer. To transfer other files to your computer, like documents you made in iPad Pages for example, you will need to use the iPad File Sharing utility. The File Sharing utility is supported in iTunes version 9.1 and later.

  • Install iTunes version 9.1 or later onto your Mac computer.

  • Connect your iPad to your Mac using the USB cable. Wait for iTunes to sync with your iPad. All the music, videos, photos and contacts on your iPad are now transferred to your computer.

  • Click on your iPad in the "Devices" section on the left side of the iTunes window to transfer additional files to your computer.

  • Click the "Apps" tab in the main section of the iTunes window. Look for the "File Sharing" section at the bottom of the listed apps. A list of your iPad apps that support file sharing is listed in this section.

  • Click on the iPad app that has the documents you want to transfer to your computer. This gives you a list of the documents in that app.

  • Click on the file you want to share. A pop-up window will appear. Select the folder on your computer where you want to place the file. Then, click "Choose."
