How to Soothe a Sore Tummy

Save

A sore tummy can be the cause of many different types of stomach aches and pains including indigestion, heartburn, nausea, food poisoning and gas pains. Some people just have an overly sensitive stomach which may be caused by certain foods or beverages. When a stomach ache hits, you want the quickest relief possible which may be an over-the-counter medication, herbal remedy or an herbal tea.

Things You'll Need

  • Herbal tea
  • Antacid
  • Pain medication
  • Drink a cup of herbal tea such as peppermint, chamomile or ginger tea. These herbs provide calming and soothing relief on stomach aches. Choose store-bought herbal teas or steep the leaves or flowers in hot water and sweeten with honey or sugar.

  • Take a warm bath to soothe nausea caused from eating too much or more serious conditions such as food poisoning or the flu. Lay in a bath of warm water with a washcloth laying over your stomach. Calming aromatherapy scents in the bath may provide more relief such as lavender or peppermint.

  • Massage your tummy or that of your child's to work through gas bubbles. This helps eliminate the bubbles and relieve the gas pains.

  • Take an antacid for upset stomach or heartburn. Common over-the-counter antacids include Rolaids, Tums, Pepto-Bismol, Maalox or Mylanta. Ask the pharmacist for his recommendation.

  • Take an over-the-counter medication for menstrual-related cramps, bloating and pains. Ibuprofen such as Advil is typically the most effective pain medication for cramps. Start with the minimum dose and wait 30 minutes to an hour for it to take effect. If the cramps are still present, increase your dose but do not exceed the maximum dose in a 24-hour period.

Tips & Warnings
