How to Reduce the CPU Usage in Windows 7

When you open an application in your computer, the application begins to demand some of the CPU's power for its own purposes. Likewise, whenever you interact with an open application, it uses some of your computer's CPU to process the input you send to it with your keyboard or another device. If you have several programs open, your computer might become overwhelmed by the excessive demand on the CPU's power.

  • Press "Ctrl," "Shift," and "Esc" on your keyboard. This brings up the task manager without any intermediary screen.

  • Click the "Processes" button on the task manager.

  • Click the "CPU" column header until the arrow next to the label points down.

  • Right-click a program you recognize that uses a high percentage of the CPU and click "End Process." Click "End Process" to reconfirm. This eases up on the CPU's load. Repeat this process as many times as necessary.

Tips & Warnings

  • Look in the "Description" column of every program in the task manager if you want to make sure you recognize the program or not. The "Description" column shows you the actual program name as opposed to the executable file name.
  • Do not close programs you do not recognize. Some programs might be essential to running Windows 7. Programs particular to Windows 7 you shouldn't close include "svchost.exe," "dwm.exe" and "lsass.exe."
