How to Set Up an Auto Reply in the Mac Email Client

Mac Mail is a free, built-in email application included with Apple computers running the Mac OS X operating system. The email program supports Gmail, AOL Mail, Yahoo! Mail, Exchange and MobileMe mail and lets users manage all of their email from a simple user interface. If you're going to be on vacation or away from your email for a while, you can set up an auto reply message. The auto reply message is automatically sent with a custom message when a new email is received.

  • Click the "Mail" icon from the desktop or toolbar of your computer.

  • Click "Mail" from the top menu. Click "Preferences" and then click "Rules."

  • Click "Add Rule" and enter a name for your automatic reply.

  • Set the necessary conditions for the automatic reply to send. This may include a specific time period or a certain set of email addresses.

  • Click "Reply to Message" from the "Perform the following actions" pop-up window.

  • Click "Reply message text." Enter the text you wish to appear in the automatic reply message.

  • Click "OK" to save changes.

Tips & Warnings

  • Mail must be running in order to send an automatic reply. If you are logged out of your account or the computer is shut down, the auto reply will not be sent.
