If you have been diagnosed with a permanent disability, you will apply for Supplemental Security Income (SSI) benefits from the Social Security Administration (SSA). It may take months for the SSA to review and approve your application. In the meantime, your bills accumulate and your need for income becomes greater. Checking on the status of your claim and the first disability check is easy, although you may not always get the answer you hope for.
Things You'll Need
- Social Security Number
Call the SSA at 800-772-1213 or the local office where you filed your claim.
Provide the representative with your Social Security Number and other information required to identify you properly and locate your claim.
Ask if all information regarding your claim has been received and whether payments have been sent. You first check will be for the first full month after you applied and became eligible for SSI.
Wait for your check to come. Checks are sent at the start of every month and arrive by the fourth day in most cases. If you fear your check is lost, stolen or otherwise delayed, call the SSA immediately.
