How to Erase a Phone Message When Leaving One

Anyone can make a mistake when leaving an important voicemail message. Either you have an irresistible urge to sneeze or cough, the dog starts barking, or one of the kids starts making noises--leaving you to wonder if you sounded professional enough. With some voicemail systems, erase the message you left and start over.

  • Listen to the entire message that plays before you leave the message. Some automated greetings tell you if there is a menu you can access.

  • Try pressing the "#" or "1" key after you leave the message. If you pressed the right key, the voicemail system takes you into a menu.

  • Listen to the menu options, and select the option to erase and rerecord the message.

Tips & Warnings

  • Not all voicemail systems give you the option to erase the message, so if it's an important message, try to get it right the first time.
