Three-card poker was invented in the 1990s by Derek J. Webb of Great Britain. It has evolved into a popular casino game with more than 1,000 tables. There are professional three-card poker players, just as there are professionals in Texas Hold 'Em. There are even three-card poker tournaments. The game is played against a dealer, as in blackjack.

Memorize the rankings of the various hands. They differ slightly from those in the five-card version. However, the highest hand possible is still a straight flush, which is three cards of the same suit in sequence. The next best hand is three of a kind, followed by three cards of different suits in sequence (called a straight). Ranking next is three cards of the same suit (called a flush), then a pair and finally, a high card.

Become familiar with the odds and betting structure. The odds are significantly different than in other forms of poker, and they play a huge role in betting intelligently. All players must wager an initial amount of money, known as an Ante (or "Play" bet) before the cards are dealt. Knowing the odds will help you decide when you should drop out of the round.

Practice online for fun, not money. It will be a lot easier on your bankroll. In three-card poker, you play against the dealer. If the dealer does not have a queen or better in his hand, you automatically win the ante. You can also place a "Pair Plus" bet, in which hands that have a pair or higher automatically win the wager. The game is simple, but it will take time to master.
