How to Repair a Computer With No Video Signal

There's nothing more frustrating than turning on your computer only to get a blank screen. You may hear the computer running but still see nothing. This may seem like a daunting challenge for those not experienced in troubleshooting, but it is actually one of the simpler computer hardware problems to fix. You may not see the problem, but it's limited to a few causes.

Things You'll Need

  • Monitor
  • Test your monitor. Replace your monitor with another monitor if you have one, to see if the monitor is bad. If you don't have another monitor, disconnect it from your computer and turn it on. Something should come on the screen, such as an error telling no signal. If nothing comes on the screen, it is the monitor that is bad.

  • Open the computer case. Unscrew the access door from the back of the case. Push any release buttons and then remove the door.

  • Check your RAM. The RAM is located in the middle of the motherboard. There are tabs that you can push to release the RAM. Remove it and put it back in place until the tabs pop out. Loose RAM can cause your computer not to start properly where you want to see a video signal.

  • Replace the video card. If it's not the monitor or RAM, it's likely that your video card is bad. Unscrew the card from the back of the computer. Pull it out and replace it with a new video card. Close the computer case and plug the monitor back in.
