Western Digital's My Passport software restricts the way you can access your external drive; you can only use its program to transfer or extract data. If you want to use the drive as a regular drive, you must get past the software that blocks unauthorized access to the drive. The only true way to do this is to uninstall the software on the drive, turning it into a generic external hard drive.
Things You'll Need
- My Passport Firmware Updater
- Western Digital Virtual CD Manager
Double-click the Firmware updater program to start it up. If you do not have the program, download it.
Enter the serial number located on the back of the MyPassport drive at the prompt.
Click through the remaining prompts to install the latest firmware for your drive.
Double-click the Virtual CD Manager and click "Continue" in the program that appears.
Click "Configure Disk," then exit the program immediately. Disconnect the USB drive to finish the uninstall of the software.
