How to Change Your Icons in Windows 7

Windows 7 has many features to customize your computer's appearance. To change the appearance of your computer, you can adjust the background, screensaver, mouse pointers, sounds and icons. Changing a folder icon requires you to adjust the settings in the icon's properties. To change the icon of a desktop item, adjust the settings in the Control Panel.

Change General Folder Icons

  • Right-click the icon that you want to change and click "Properties."

  • Click "Change Icon."

  • Choose an icon from the list and click "OK." If you have an icon saved on your computer that does not appear in the list, clicks the "Browse" button and navigate to the folder containing the icon. Double-click the icon and click "OK."

Change Desktop Icons

  • Click the "Start" button and click "Control Panel."

  • Click "Appearance and Personalization" and click "Personalization."

  • Click "Change Desktop Icons" and click the icon that you want to change.

  • Click "Change Icon," choose an icon from the list and click "OK." If you have an icon saved on your computer that does not appear in the list, clicks the "Browse" button and navigate to the folder containing the icon. Double-click the icon and click "OK."

Tips & Warnings

  • Desktop items include the Recycle Bin (empty and full), Computer, Network, Control Panel and user files.
