How to Make a Sad Face on a Laptop

Laptop keyboards often omit certain keys for the sake of simplification.

Emoticon use is an entertaining and simple method of quickly communicating your feelings in an informal way. Through a series of brief keystrokes, you can instantly tell another person that you are happy or sad, and even wink at them. Some keyboard layouts are different than others, however, so a user can miss one of the keys necessary for the process if he is unfamiliar with the device, especially in the case of the abbreviated key layout of a laptop.

Instructions

    • 1

Press the space bar to separate the emoticon from the rest of your sentence.

    • 2

Press and hold the "Shift" key while pressing the ": ;" key. A colon -- ":" -- appears.

    • 3

Press and hold the "Shift" key while pressing the "9" key to create a "(" symbol.

    • 4

Type another space to separate the ":(" you've created from the rest of the sentence.

Tips & Warnings

  • You can also add a "Nose" to the emoticon by typing a dash between the ":" and the "(" to create a ":-(" emoticon.
