Most girls get bored with their look at some point. Changing your look gives you a fun way of expressing your personality – after all, your personality changes over time, and your look should express that. First, try changes that you can easily reverse if you don’t like them. Think about dramatic changes for at least a week before making up your mind, instead of just splurging for them on a whim.

Try parting your hair at an angle, or creating a zigzag part for a funky look. Blow-dry your hair with a diffuser and scrunch it to add volume and wave. Try wearing microbraids or big, flowing curls. Paint your nails a bold color or have a French manicure with nail decals. Adding a new type of accessory, such as a row of dangly bracelets or a few rings, will jazz up your style, too. If you’ve been thinking of a tattoo, try henna body art instead. It will last at least a few days, and you’ll have a great time creating henna designs with a few of your pals.

Layer your long locks if you don't want to hack them off. Long layers give hair definition and body. Try tapered layers around your face to highlight your features. Consider opting for bangs to give your look a dramatic change. Side-swept bangs often look nice with a rounder face, for instance, and they add a little drama (see References 1).

Consider adding highlights to change your look in a subtle way. Vivid color streaks can last for a few weeks or longer, and add drama. Opting for a totally new color will really freshen up your look, if you’re craving a big change. Try a hair glaze to enhance your existing color and shine, and deep condition your hair to keep it glowing (see References 2).

Update your wardrobe if you're tired of your clothes. You don't have to buy all new pieces; instead, pick out a new hat, scarf, belt or shoes. Go to a thrift store and find intriguing new clothes without spending a lot of money. Try mixing and matching your clothes in different ways -- your denim shorts might look cute over leggings with long, funky striped socks. If you like to sew, try updating a few clothing pieces you're tired of, cropping the sleeves of a shirt or angling the base of a skirt. Have friends help you figure out new ways to mix up your wardrobe. Invite a few pals over for a clothing trade party and exchange some of your clothes so you all can create new looks for free.

Tips & Warnings

  • Look through magazines and fashion websites to see what looks you're drawn to, and try to think of a few words that define the look you want to create. Then you'll be able to create a look that fits you. Remember, though, you don't have to fit into a stereotype or look like anyone else, so feel free to mix and match styles.
