How to Find a Percentage Discount
A percent discount measures the size of a discount in relation to the original price. This can help you determine how significant a sale actually is because a discount of $5 on a $10 item matters much more than a $5 discount on a $250 item. To figure the percentage discount, you need to know the original price and the sales price.
Instructions

1
Subtract the sale price from the original price. For example, if a dress is marked down from $90 to $78, subtract $78 from $90 to find the discount equals $12.
-
2
Divide the discount by the original price. In this example, divide $12 by $90 to get 0.1333.
-
-
3
Multiply the Step 2 result by 100 to convert the discount to a percentage. Completing the example, multiply 0.1333 by 100 to find that a markdown from $90 to $78 represents a 13.33 percent discount.
