Type your last name into The Internet Surname Database at Surnamedb.com. This is a resource that will bring up the history of your last name including its origin location and any associated meanings. You can also browse a listing of last names in alphabetical order, allowing you to research the surnames of friends and associates as well, with the click of a button.

Use TheTreeMaker.com, which is another site that allows you to search for the origin of your last name by typing it into a box. With your last name typed into the box, click "Go." If you are unable to find your last name in the database you can order a surname research package and have experts thoroughly research the name and provide you with results. Use ProGenealogists.com. ProGenealogists is a research firm associated with the website Ancestry.com. Click the "Fast Facts About your Surname" button and type your last name into the box on screen. You can also use the same website to provide your full name, in order to find a listing of any ancestors you have that are in the web database.
