How to Freeze Cilantro & Parsley


Both cilantro and parsley are recommended as good herbs to freeze for longer-term storage. It's easier than drying, and freezing doesn't seem to affect the taste, so you can use thawed cilantro or parsley similarly to how you'd use the fresh herbs. However, the herbs won't work as well in fresh dishes. It's most important for you to clean the herbs well and preserve them in an airtight container to protect them from freezer burn.

Things You'll Need

  • Colander
  • Paper towels
  • Plastic freezer bag
  • Knife
  • Nonstick spray
  • Ice cube tray
  • Wash the whole sprigs of cilantro and parsley under cool running water.

  • Allow it to drain in a colander.

  • Wrap paper towels around the sprigs to absorb any leftover water.

  • Put a few sprigs in a small plastic freezer bag. Squeeze out all the air and seal it shut before placing it in the freezer. Or, if you prefer chopped cilantro or parsley, chop it into small pieces and freeze in an ice cube tray. Spray the ice cube tray with nonstick spray first, and cover the pieces with water before placing the tray in the freezer. Once the cubes are frozen solid, store the cubes in a freezer bag.

Tips & Warnings

  • Store cilantro and parsley separately and mark clearly the name of the herb and the date.
  • Use frozen cilantro or parsley in cooked dishes not fresh dishes.
  • Purchase cilantro or parsley with fresh leaves; do not purchase if they are wilted or discolored.
  • Break off pieces of frozen cilantro or parsley as need.
  • Frozen cilantro and parsley keep for about six months.
