How to Feed a Guppy
Guppies are tolerant tropical fish. They are omnivores and will survive on a range of diets, but they do best on high quality algae-based fish food supplemented with occasional live or frozen food. A good diet also intensifies the colors of their fins and tails.
Things You'll Need
- Algae-based fish food
- Frozen food
- Brine shrimp and micro-food
- Gravel cleaner with tube

1
Crumble a pinch of the dried food between your fingers and sprinkle the food in the tank two or three times a day. A rough guide is to feed no more than the guppies can eat within three to five minutes. Start with a tiny pinch and add more food as required.

2
Insert live food such as daphnia or brine shrimp to the tank once or twice a week. Frozen food is an acceptable alternative. The portion of live food should be slightly larger than the portion of dried food.

Feed newly hatched brine shrimp or commercial fry food to any guppy fry (babies) three to five times a day. Feed the fry mostly live food for the first few weeks. The fry can also eat finely crumbled dried food.

Tips & Warnings
Brine shrimp and commercial fry food are available from aquarium suppliers.
If the guppies don't catch and eat nearly all of the live food within a few minutes, you are giving them too much.
If the fish leave any food, feed them much less the next time. Remove the excess with a gravel cleaner to avoid pollution problems.
Some types of live food, like bloodworms, are high in fat. Only feed bloodworms to guppies as an occasional treat once or twice a month. Guppies, especially ones over 6 months old, can develop obesity problems.
