How to Print Screen Using a Dell Keyboard on an iMac

PC and Mac keyboards are similar in functionality, but are not identical. PC keyboards have an extra set of keys, and both keyboards have special keys -- such as the "Windows" key or the "Apple" key -- designed specifically for the particular operating system. While it's possible to use a PC keyboard like a Dell keyboard with your iMac, the "Print Screen" key will not perform the screen capture function like it normally would with a PC. You can, however, use a different key combination to perform the print screen function with the Dell keyboard.

  • Press the "Ctrl" button and hold it down. There are two "Ctrl" buttons on a Dell keyboard, one in the bottom left corner of the keyboard and the other in the bottom right corner of the alphabetical keys on the keyboard.

  • Press and hold the "Windows" key, located directly to the right of the left "Ctrl" key. Continue holding "Ctrl."

  • Press and hold the "Shift" key. There are two "Shift" keys on a Dell keyboard, one on the left side of the alphabetical keys and one on the right side, both directly above the "Ctrl" key on each side. Continue holding the other two keys.

  • Press the "3" number key. This copies the entire screen to the clipboard. Release all keys.

  • Press the "Windows" key and "V" key at the same time to paste the screen in a document.

Tips & Warnings

  • Press "Windows," "Shift" and "3" at the same time to copy only the front-most window to the clipboard.
