When calling the United States from countries other than Canada, you need more than just the area code and the number. If you just dial the number, the local carrier's phone system won't recognize the call as an international number. In order to place a call to a United States area code successfully, you need to punch in a code that tells the local carrier that the number is not local.
Dial the exit code of the country you are located in. The exit code tells the local telephone carrier you are preparing to make an international call. You can find a list of country exit codes in the Resources section.
Dial the country code. The country code for the United States is "1."
Dial the area code. The area code is the first three digits of a 10-digit phone number.
Dial the rest of the phone number to complete the call.
Tips & Warnings
- When dialing from Canada, you don't need to dial an exit code. Just dial 1, then the area code and number.
- Long distance charges can be costly. You can save money by purchasing a local prepaid calling card and using the card to make calls to the United States. Dial the access number on the card, and follow the voice prompts to enter the area code and number you wish to call.
