How to Insert an Arrow in OpenOffice

Save

Although your keyboard has "arrow" keys, these obviously do not add arrow graphics into your documents. However, that does not mean you do not have the ability to do so. OpenOffice.org Writer allows you to enter a variety of special characters into your document, including a selection of arrows. These arrows are useful for equations, directions or to just draw attention to a passage. Although you are likely to use this feature mostly in Writer, this procedure also works for OpenOffice.org's spreadsheet program, Calc.

  • Open OpenOffice.org Writer or Calc.

  • Click the place where you want the arrow to go.

  • Click "Insert" in the top menu bar, and select "Special Character..."

  • Click the "Subset" drop-down menu in the "Special Characters" window, and select "Arrows." You will have to scroll down the list to see this category.

  • Click the arrow you prefer. You can select from left, right, up, down, vertical double arrows and horizontal double arrows.

  • Click "OK" to enter your selection into your document.
