How to Create Email Accounts in Outlook


A single email account is often not enough. Many computer users need multiple email accounts and email addresses to help them separate work and social communications. Creating a dedicated email account specifically for signing up for online offers or joining membership-based websites is also a sensible way to keep your main email accounts free of spam. The Microsoft Outlook email client allows users to create multiple email accounts and setting up a new email account is straightforward.

Things You'll Need

  • Internet access
  • Email account login and server information
  • Launch Microsoft Outlook from the "Start" menu or desktop screen on your computer.

  • Click the "File" tab in the Outlook menu bar.

  • Click "Add Account" under the "Account Information" heading.

  • Type your name, email address and password into the dialog boxes. Click "Next." Outlook will try to setup the email account automatically with the information you've provided.

  • Wait for the setup process to complete. This might take several minutes. Outlook displays a progress bar during the setup. If Outlook fails to setup the email account automatically, you'll need to manually configure the connection. For this you'll require the incoming server and outgoing server details for the email account. You can get this information from the Internet service provider or email account provider.

  • Click the "Manually Configure Server Settings" check box in the "Problem Connecting to Server" window that Outlook displayed when it failed to automatically configure the email account.

  • Click "Advanced Settings." Enter the incoming mail server details and outgoing server details in the relevant dialog boxes. You'll usually also need to enter the user name and password for the email account in the relevant dialog boxes. Once you've entered all information click "Finish."

  • Restart Outlook to implement the changes.

Tips & Warnings

  • To set up a Hotmail or MSN email address with Microsoft Outlook you'll need to use the Microsoft Outlook Connector for Windows Live Hotmail add-in to create the email account. When you try to setup the account you'll be prompted to download Outlook Connector. Click "Yes" and follow the steps in the on-screen prompts to setup the email account.
  • Internet and email providers sometimes refer to incoming mail servers as POP servers and outgoing mail servers as SMTP servers.
