How to Text in Landscape on an iPhone

The iPhone accelerometer technology interprets the device's physical positioning and renders the appropriate orientation on your touch display. The iPhone supports portrait and landscape orientation in various apps to enhance your viewing experience and to make navigation more efficient. Flipping the orientation of the iPhone can also make inputting information easier. For example, some users prefer to text in landscape orientation because it provides more room for the on-screen keyboard.

  • Open "Messages." The application loads to your screen displaying a list of your text conversations.

  • Rotate the iPhone to landscape position. The Messages interface flips from portrait to landscape orientation.

  • Select a conversation from your messages list, or tap the icon at the right of the top toolbar to compose a new message.

  • Tap the text field to bring up your on-screen keyboard.

  • Continue to hold the iPhone in the landscape position to text in landscape orientation.

  • Press the "Send" button to send the message.

  • Rotate the iPhone back to portrait position to flip the orientation.
